Year 9 Camp and Retreat

Camp Columba resounded to the excited cries of our year 9 students during the last week of term. Challenges included high ropes courses, rock climbing, abseiling, slug gun shooting and raft building. The groups rotated through eight activities. The camp was also an opportunity to reinforce the V8 values that the Verdon family hold dear. Thanks go to Miss Lyall for her organisation of the camp details, Mrs Lyall for the catering, as well as the staff and parent helpers who made the camp such a success.

Bishop's Shield Competition

During the last weekend of term the annual diocesan competition was hosted at St Kevin’s. Standout achievements were Rosmund More’s winning scripture reading and Alice McDowell’s winning prepared speech. Both of these students used their finely honed public speaking skills to produce superb quality presentations. In the drama our juniors had the audience vote with their Sponge Bob interpretation of the parable of the Good Samaritan. The senior drama was notable for Ben Wilmot’s tremendous characterisation in their performance. The team as a whole represented the College very well. Many of the students were competing in events for the first time and will bring back experiences to build on for next year.

Verdon Win Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival

The Southland Regional final of the University of Otago Sheilah Winn Festival of Shakespeare in Schools was held at Verdon College on Thursday 3 April.

Verdon Colllege was the host of the event for 2008 which was well supported by secondary schools from all over the Southland region.

The Verdon team was the winner with their performance which was a 15 minute exert from Midsummer Night's Dream. This version had a Punk Rock theme to the music and costume. Ben Cochrane also won the best cameo performance award. A big thank you to all who helped with the preparation for the evening and to Mrs Horrell who directed the play and motivated the team!

The Verdon team will compete in the national Shakespeare Festival which will held in Wellington during Queens Birthday weekend. We wish them well.

More photographs of the evening can be viewed online.
